Toyota 4Runner: A Manual Version in the Works?

How would you react if I told you that Toyota could offer a manual transmission option for the 4Runner directly from the factory—but chooses not to? This statement is true, and the Japanese automaker justifies it by saying that there simply isn’t enough demand. That’s what a Toyota spokesperson recently told Car and Driver in an interview.

A Promising Possibility

What makes this news interesting, in my opinion, is that Toyota mentioned it is technically possible for the sixth-generation 4Runner to offer a manual transmission. There was no outright denial, which suggests that the automaker might be considering adding this feature to its SUV lineup in the coming years—or even months.

A Familiar Scenario

If we look back a few years to the launch of the new Supra, Toyota initially stated that there was no chance it would be offered with a manual transmission. Needless to say, the Japanese manufacturer changed its mind when the new Nissan Z hit the market. As if by magic, a manual gearbox was suddenly added to the sports car’s lineup.

When it comes to the 4Runner, it’s important to look at the competition first. The SUV’s two biggest rivals are undoubtedly the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler. Both offer a manual transmission, which is precisely why Toyota should provide this option. In fact, a manual Toyota 4Runner was available until the late 1990s. Since then, this feature has never been reintroduced for the model. However, times have changed—especially with strong competitors like the Bronco and Wrangler. In my opinion, we shouldn’t be surprised if Toyota adds a manual gearbox to the 4Runner lineup soon.

The Closest Alternative

For now, if you’re looking for a Toyota vehicle with a manual transmission that also offers off-road capabilities, the Tacoma pickup truck is your best option. In fact, it is the only pickup in North America to offer this feature since Jeep decided to discontinue the manual transmission for the Gladiator.
