Toyota Kayoibako concept

 toyota concept

As is the case every year, Toyota presents us with concepts that are more breathtaking than the last during the Japan Mobility Show. The 2023 edition is no exception with the Kayoibako concept, a small, futuristic-looking electric utility van.

It's no coincidence that Toyota chose the name Kayoibako for its concept, as it refers to the small boxes used to transport parts from one place to another in Toyota's factories in Japan. It's amusing and quite fitting since the concept really resembles a box with added lights, four wheels, and a steering wheel.

A utility vehicle

Although this concept is unlikely to go into production someday, it remains interesting and, most importantly, significant for the brand's future. According to Toyota, its small van could have a multitude of commercial and utility applications. It's the kind of vehicle that could clearly appeal to companies specializing in delivery services.

But that's not all; the Kayoibako concept also has some civilian potential. Its design allows wheelchair access without major modifications. Moreover, it's a vehicle that could easily be converted into a recreational vehicle. Toyota has already presented a converted RV version, and the result is rather impressive.

The interior of the concept has been designed so that a wheelchair can be positioned on the passenger side and directly behind the steering wheel. This is not something you find in any current production model. To achieve this in most cases, significant modifications are required. Who knows, maybe the concept will inspire Toyota to offer such a feature in a production model in the coming years?

As for the powertrain, Toyota hasn't mentioned anything other than the fact that it's an electric vehicle. However, it's not crucial at the moment. Anyway, there's little chance that such a small vehicle will be available for sale in North America one day. On the other hand, it's not impossible that technologies or gadgets developed for this concept could find their way into a production model. What makes the Kayoibako concept so interesting is the fact that it can be easily customized to suit our needs.
